Glad She Is Gone

GSI Gone just sent me the following note about Olivia Fox and Steve Harvey. Old news, but hey - we don't all listen 24/7!

I tried to listen to the Olivia Fox show but it was absolutely annoying. All Olivia did was talk about FOOD and she should have just joined Jenny Craig. Her little immature girls that she had working with her were out dated and annoying as well with the HATED IT!!! I hated it… And Mike with the BOOOOO, I just wanted to jack slap him. None of them were funny I am so Happy she is GONE and if you all miss her you could probably find her at the closest BUFFET. I would just change to 98.7 and listen to them until she was off the air.

As far as Steve Harvey is concerned, he is a bit annoying as well but he is a bit funnier than Olivia ever was.And I can stomach him much better.

Gsigone.

Melissa Foreman Back on Lite FM in Chicago

Or at least that's what my visitors tell me. Whoopi must be devoting all her time to her later-in-the-day day-job on the view.

Melissa verifies it herself on her personality page on the station's website:

This morning was our first day back on the air... Can't wait to wake up with you from
5:30- 8:30am and then take you home from 4-7p!!!

Eeegads! That is a long day with the double shift. Hopefully they find an afternoon drive replacement soon and Melissa can settle back into her morning gig.

As promised, Imus returning. Maybe

I just read it on a blog called it hurts when I pee. So it must be true. The I-man cometh again for his come-backiest come back ever. At the age of 67, will this be his last come back? How well will he be accepted this time after such broad public outrage at his NHH comments.

Christmas Music Cleanses the Palate

A Pittsburgh radio station - which had only switched formats this past April - abruptly canceled its entire format again today and opted to play Christmas music.

Rumor has it that the station will unveil a completely new lineup this Friday, October 5th at 5 O'Clock.

It just doesn't make sense - doesn't sound like they planned it at all. Sounds more like CBS, the company that owns the station, got pissed off and just fired everybody without having a plan in place. Local DeeJays John Steigerwald, John McIntire and Scott Paulsen were all immediately fired. Several syndicated contracts, including deals with the satellite sisters Opie and Anthony, as well as comedian-turned-neo-con Dennis Miller, were all canceled.

Maybe I'm wrong... Maybe this is an ingenious move... abruptly firing everybody and playing Christmas music in October. Merry Christmas, You're Fired. Nice.

Is market research available that shows that if a radio station switches formats, it's best to play Christmas music non-stop for 3 days to cleanse the palates of the local market? Is that the secret to make the station's loyal fans forget about all of their favorite programming.

Pigeon Flies After 20 Years

Jeff Pigeon hosted the morning show on WIBC Newsradio 1070 AM for almost 20 years, and spent 27 years at the same station overall.

I suspect that his instinct to get out "before listeners grew tired of him" was kind, but what's the real story? Does a man work for the same station - or any company - for that long and just decide to quit? Not retire, not move on to a bigger market or more powerful station, but just abruptly announce on Friday that Monday will be his last day?

Now you're left with Query and Terry, as the station claims to have no plans to replace the Pidge-meister.

The real story is probably closer to this (and I'm only speculating) - Corporate owners looked at the bottom line and decided to make a change. Don't be surprised to hear Jack-FM or some syndicated talking head come into Jeff's slot for half the money they were paying him.

Or maybe Jeff Pigeon just decided to leave after 27 years at the same place. Whatever happened, good luck Jeff!

Related and unrelated links:
Jeff Pigeon's morning show producer Dan has some cool stuff on his blog on the stations website, including Jeff's first aircheck and other various nostalgia. Check it out here.

Here's a link to the Blog of Jeff Pidgeon. It's a different Jeff Pigeon than the now-former radio host from Indy. This Jeff spells "Pigeon" wrong differently and lives in California. After reading several posts, including what Jeff Pidgeon did over the weekend, I got to bored to keep reading and trying to figure out what the blog is all about. That's the thing about blogs, I guess.

Why all the interest in Julie Fisk?

With all the email I get about her, it's as if Julie Fisk was the most popular woman on the radio. Then why did she disappear from her popular morning show gig and start clacking for Jack-FM? As the kinks sang in Around the Dial, "it couldn't be the ratings, you had the best in town".

Latest word is that she is no longer even working on the soul-less Jack-FM. Amy G wrote...
She had been doing Jacktivities on Dallas' Jack-FM (100.3), but now there's some new girl. I was on the phone a couple weeks ago and heard her make some smart-ass comment about Julie and how the electroshock treatments are working... please tell me she's just on maternity leave! I have hated every show after she's left!

Thanks for the tip, Amy. I like the term "Jacktivities" and think I'll claim it as my own.

Websites for DJs - sort of an ad

Hey Mr. DJ,

No offense, but your website sucks. Looks like it was designed 3 years ago.

Makes you look old.

And those broken links - what's up with that?
Here's what you do.
Visit our favorite web design team at truegraphic.com.

They're young and hip like your listeners - which means they don't say hip anymore, so they'll do it right.

Listeners Still Miss Melissa

Nancy from Chicago just commented:

okay - enough of this whoopi - the ratings for WLIT have got to be down.

BRING BACK MELISSA!!

She made my day - that whole crew on that morning show was the best you will ever find.

Maybe, just maybe, Melissa Forman likes her new shift.

The I-Man Cometh

I'm not convinced that he's definitely coming back. In fact, in the world of denial-media, since nobody is saying that he's NOT coming back, I almost can't believe that he's really coming back.

However, let's face it. IMUS really is coming back.

I've listened to IMUS for years, and the man is not too bad at being self-effacing and apologetic when need be. Most importantly, he's a great salesman - he's been pitching products on the radio for nearly 40 years (yes, I said 40 - WikiPedia told me that Imus' first radio gig was in 1968!).

The rumors of the return of Imus began more than a month ago, when WFAN personalities Mike and the Mad Dog made comments that some people interpreted as Imus would return. I did not hear those comments, but I did hear the Fan in June of 2007 replay Imus moments from 9/11. Could it be that they were just testing the waters?

My prediction is that Imus will return at the end of the summer - after his usual time at the cattle ranch - but that the show will have to sacrifice producer Bernie McGuirk.

If it's ok with Al, then it's ok with me.

101.1 Flips at 1:01 Today - Cute

Back in 2005, WCBS FM 101.1 disappeared in favor of the ubiquitious and annoying ipod-like Jack format.

Now, the oldies format is back on WCBS FM 101.1.

I guess all the oldies DJs were just dicking around for two years. Dan Taylor is back to host the Morning Drive with Mr. G (Irv Gikofsky) and Al Meredith, and Bob Shannon and Broadway Bill Lee are also returning.

McFly vs McFly

Ok, I know you're here looing for McFly, but I don't know which one.

Is it the overnight radio DJ in Denver on Damn 105.9?
We mentioned George McFly over a year ago when he left 105.9 for 99.9, but it looks like he's back on 105.9 again.
[Edit: I think 105.9 just has outdated web pages, and is no longer Damn105.9 but is actually now, still, Alice 105.9 with NO George McFly. McFly's still on 99.9 - check out the McFly Experience here.]

Or is it this trendy pop band?

Seriously, let me know...

IMUS and his morning joe

I just learned from RDNCentral.com that rumors are heating up about a return of IMUS in the morning to WFAN in New York.

See what Don Kaplan had to say about it in today's new york post.

However, looks like IMUS will be exclusively on the radio, as Joe Scarborough's Morning Joe program is set to permanently take over the morning show slot on MSNBC as reported by Jossip.

News about TV hosts like this makes me think about revitalizing NewsMoves.com, but time does not allow.

Mike Webb Murdered

Mike Webb, who we mentioned was fired from KIRO back in 2005, was found dead this past Thursday according to 365gay.com and several other news sources.

Webb was last seen on April 13th 2007.

If you know who did it, or have a tip about Mike Webb's murder, then you must tell the Seattle Police here.

If you know something, but you're chicken you'll end up like Mike Webb, tell these anonymous tip people instead - here. Tips are taken 24 hours a day (1-800-crime-13) and you can remain completely anonymous.

Adam Carolla Missing In San Diego

Shirley from California writes:

I live in San Diego and last week I turned on the radio to listen to Adam Carolla on 107 and he was gone. There was a lady playing some kind of rock music. What happened to him?

I loved his morning show so if you could tell me what's going on I'd appreciate it.

Sincerely,

An avid Adam Carolla Fan- Shirley

Foreman vs. Whoopi

No, not George, but Melissa Foreman!

Many of you have asked.

And asked.

And asked.

So, I finally Googled Melissa Foreman, and it turns out she is right back where she was when she first disappeared from her morning spot, but she's now in the afternoons.

It seems she has had nothing but trouble since giving birth on June 6th of last year (AKA 6/6/06 - scary date!).

Here's her story from her blog:
HEY GANG! IM BACK....SO SORRY, WOUND UP OUT FOR A WEEK DUE TO EMERGENCY GALLBLADDER SURGERY!!

DJ Jobs

Let's face it - DJs get fired all the time.

And nobody knows where they go.

Sometimes they don't go ANYWHERE right away, because they have not found a new job yet.

Now, DJMoves can help.

On the right side of every page of DJmoves.com, there should be a box with job listings for DJs.

Are you a displaced DJ? Use it.

Are you a wannabe DJ? You can use it, too, but don't hold your breath - there are a lot of experienced DJs out there that you'd be competing with for jobs, but Hey, you never know.

Let us know where you land, and we'll let the world know. Good luck!

I Don't Hear Anything Either

Wondering what happened to your favorite Web Radio Station?

It's not your Internet connection, and they did not (necessarily) go out of business or offline indefinitely.

It's a protest of some sort over royalties, blah, blah, blah. For many apathetic listeners, however, it will probably be an excuse to simply listen to your iPod or find an uncaring web radio station that is not participating in the protest.

Here are some news articles about it if you want to get edu-ma-cated:

Washington Post

San Fran Chronicle

Very Pregnant, Very Fired

Lisa Marie, a concerned fan in Fresno writes to DJ Moves:

Athena Matsikas is missing from BigCountry 102.7 and fans want to know why. Help she was pregnant and due in just a couple of weeks.

I've been getting emails for several days about Athena Matsikas, and haven't seen anything (haven't looked that hard) until now. Here's what I found:

According to Rick Bentley writing for the Fresno Bee, Matsikas stated "All I can say is that the station has decided to go to a jockless format for the morning show."

DJ Laz MIA in Miami

Not going to spend too much time on this story, as I suspect it's a non-issue.

However, I've got 500 people an hour writing me and visiting DJMoves.com asking me "WTF happened to DJ Laz on Power 96 in Miami?"

See what the Miami New Times is speculating here [link fixed June 12 2007].

No clue is given, as is usually the case from the radio station's website. In fact, as of this morning, Laz's web page is still up on Power96.com.

Any one have the 411? Post it here as a comment, or email DJ Moves.

K-Rock. Free FM. K-Rock Again

Talk is dead and rock lives at one of America's original rock stations.

92.3 FM in New York City has dropped its 24-hour talk format and reverted back to it's rock and roll roots.

The station is also switching its call letters back from WFNY to WXRK, which it had used for many, many years before switching to all-talk and billing itself as FREE FM.

Still talking on the station, for now, are Opie & Anthony in the mornings. After that, it's back to rock and the less expensive daily DJs - the kind that are less costly than "radio personalities".

Getting fired in the switch are:
Nick Di Paolo
Radio Chick Leslie Gold (who sounded great with David Gregory in the Imus slot last week)
Ron and Fez
And, as previously reported, JV and Elvis and their house of dogs.

Mueller Over Milwaukee

Gene Mueller of Milwaukee's Reitman & Mueller morning show on WKTI 94.5 has moved to AM to co-host mornings with John Jagler on WTMJ News Radio 620.

Mueller has been on the air in the same town for 25 years.

Did someone say Milwaukee?

Athena The Queena

Someone named Janet in Fresno, California, just sent DJMoves and email with the following observation:

Hi,

Athena [who DJ Moves mentioned in March 2006] seems to have vanished from the web page of Big Country 102.7 in
Fresno CA. This woman made the station . Without her they are nothing.
What happened?

Number One Fan of Athena

Well, Number One, we'll keep our ears open for Athena.

David Gregory To Fill Imus' Boots?

Looks like my instincts were right (again). After several on-air auditions by celebrities from the world of sports and news - most accompanied by Charles McCord - it seems the 660 The Fan morning radio show left vacant by the firing of Don Imus is set to be filled by NBC White House Correspondent David Gregory.

David Gregory, who has been sitting in the morning spot the past few mornings, along with somebody named Leslie who calls herself The Radio Chick, brings a familiar voice to the old Imus show. Gregory also brings good "gets" (big name guests), such as Barack Obama and Tony Snow. Most importantly, though not radio-polished, Gregory sounded WAY more comfortable in the slot than did Dobbs or the McEnroe brothers.

The Mac brothers were interesting to listen to, but John needed to get over himself. I mean, yes, I want to drink beers with the guy some time, but I don't want to hear about it on the radio. Dobbs was disappointing because I don't mind him on TV - him and McCord together was like two straightmen with nobody to deliver the punchline. Boomer was promising, but not likely to bring the same political powerhouses to the show as I suspect Gregory to be able to do regularly.

My vote is for David Gregory and the Radio Chick (or was it the Radio Babe, or the Sports Babe - I forget - maybe she should just use her real name).

Say It Ain't So, Mo, Part Two

A dedicated DJ Moves fan wrote in today:

Hi,

I'm Steve in Louisville Ky & a regular listener to WLRS morning show with Mo starring Bryan Modzelewski. He hasn't been on the air for about a week & I checked out the stations web sit & he is not listed. Where did he go? I'm a big fan.

Thanks

Your welcome, Steve (I think I like when people write to me as if they're calling into a radio show! First time, long time. Fucking NICE.)

Anyway, what did Mo do this time? Not sure yet, but here's what he did LAST time.

Monday, May 14, 2007

Opie... Anthony? Opie? Anybody Home?

Off the air, on the air.

Where do you go when you get kicked off satellite? What's next?

Pretty soon they'll have to broadcast on pirate radio from a remote unidentified island.

JV and Elvis Have Left The Building

Still searching for Elvis?

Not the king, but the radio show guy in NYC.

The Dog House with JV and Elvis featuring Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay will no longer be broadcast according to CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo.

The pair were heard mid-mornings on 92.3 FREE-FM WFNY, formerly known as K-Rock.

They were fired for calling a Chinese restaurant and making fun of the way people talked. Very funny, you're fired.

Don Imus off the Air - Totally

Finally. It happened today. No more speculation.

A story big enough to make me come out of my semi-retirement and post an article on DJ Moves.

Not much left to be said, but it was interesting to see how MSNBC fired Imus, then proceeded to cover the story during the time his show would have aired with David Gregory as 'host' to discuss the controversy. Gregory was a regular on the Imus show, and had even filled in for him before - Is this unbiased coverage? Is this outrage, or was MSNBC trying to have their cake and eat it, too, whatever that means.

Interesting that instead of saying "Imus stated a sexist, racist remark," most media outlets repeatedly and repeatedly repeated the phrase, "nappy-headed hos". It's like when the TV news is outraged by some video of spring breakers dancing in bikinis on the beach, and they want you to be outraged, too, so they show you the college kids again and again and again.

Finally. My wife now knows 'Imus' as more than that boring old guy that I listened to in the morning for the past 13 years.
