Your DJ Out - Syndication In

Why did I start DJMoves.com? Randy Dotinga probably never even heard of this site, yet he pretty much summed it up in his article yesterday for the North County Times of San Diego.

He writes, "... across the country, nationally broadcast hosts like Seacrest are snatching up time slots once manned by local disc jockeys." (full article)

The only part he missed is how nobody bothers to let you, the loyal listener, know what happened to your favorite radio program.

Nobody, that is, uh-hem, until DJMoves.

Dallas-Fort Worth's Live 105.3 is Dead

Russ Martin fired, station format flipped. No, you're not hearing things, and no, you don't have your radio tuned to the wrong station.

Live 105.3 is now The Fan 105.3, an all-sports station in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Russ Martin's afternoon job from 3 to 7 will now be filled by Ben & Skin, who had been on the station earlier in the day.

The Jagger morning show will still be starting up the station in the morning, even as the rest of the day's format is shaken up.

Read all about it from Dan X. McGRAW writing for The Dallas Morning News.

O & A Out in Boston

The third time is no charm for Opie & Anthony - they have been removed from the Boston airwaves yet again, making it three times in ten years.

A report in the Boston Herald states that Boston's 104.1 (WBCN FM) may have cut the infamous duo because of poor ratings, but also mentioned that the station claims they simply wanted to move to a local format with local talent.

Alternatively, O and A stated on their website that WBCN cut them to save cash.

WCBN have already moved Toucher & Rich from afternoons to mornings.

Cheryl Kaye Found

Just received an email tip that Cheryl Kaye has been found on 102.9 Lite FM in the Twin Cities, MN.

It's been about one year almost to the day that we first reported her disappearance from KS95.

If you live in the Twin Cities area, you can find Kevin and Cheryl Mornings on 102.9 Lite FM weekdays from 5 to 9 a.m.

I almost worked in Minnesota once when my small Connecticut business got acquired by a big-ass company with a big-ass regional office in MN. Nice place, but too cold for me.

Go West Young Man

Unfortunately for Steve West, San Diego is about as far west as it gets.

Modern Rock XTRA-FM 91X, San Diego's Cutting Edge of Rock did some real cutting when it relieved Steve West of his midday host duties yesterday.

In a Godfather-like moment, the same corporate bean counting company that owns 91X, Finest City Broadcasting, simultaneously cut host Sherry Knight from their sister San Diego station, Magic 92.5. The San Diego's Old School website, and the 91X website, have both quietly removed all references to the exited DJs.

Fat Kid Rocks the Snow

It's been over two years since we reported that Fat Kid moved from a walk on roll in Atlanta to his own evening gig at 96.5, The Mountain, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Well, it looks like the warm weather started getting to Fat Kid (F.K.). Or maybe it was the fact that The Mountain switched formats from Alternative Rock to Top 40 and brought in a bunch of syndicated shows from other states, dispensing of the local talent. FK held on as long as could be expected, playing 90's tunes til the station brass couldn't take it anymore.

Lucky for FK, one of the last true rock stations in the country had an opening for him. A station with hot chicks (here) and calendar girl contests (here). Sure, he would have to move from a southern state to one with only about 3 weeks of summer. A land with a thousand lakes on which to ice fish. But rock is not about weather.

Anyway, you can now hear Fat Kid on 95.7 the Blaze in the Mankato Minnesota area, or see him on the YouTube video below.

Delightful Radio

Maybe I'm not the right demographic, but I was embarrassed to learn about Delilah while listening to NPR yesterday. Embarrassed because NPR told me she gets 25 MILLION listeners each night and I never even heard of her!

Are you like me? I mean, basically, are you a guy? Then you'll be further surprised to learn the show is essentially a live, more personable version of kasey kasem's long distance dedication segment.

In fact, NPR reported that Delilah personally speaks to hundreds of callers each night - OFF the air! Pretty impressive in any industry, let alone one where somebody has to use their voice and talk for hours each night ON the air.

See more pictures like this and learn more about Delilah at her site, here. Oh, by the way, I'm writing about her because after the publicity she received on NPR, her growing audience and syndication business model will probably result in many of your favorite local DJ's being replaced by Delilah. I just don't want you to get caught off guard.

Howard Stern off the Air?

No, he's just off the market as he is reportedly marrying model Beth Ostrosky right now in NYC at Le Cirque restaurant.

howard stern and beth o get marriedThe wedding has been false-reported in the past, but now it is looking official, according to ETonline as well as the NY Post.

As for the restaurant, NY Times gave it 2 out of 4 stars in a 2006 review, and the readers who left comments averaged 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Footy off the air again in Miami

Southeast Florida DJ Footy, who hosted News Radio 610 WIOD from 9 to noon daily for the past year or so after being canned by Y 100.7, is now available again.

Miami-area radio fans reported to me this morning that The Footy Show was replaced with piped in dribble from Glenn Beck. Glenn Beck's website lists him as being on 610 am already on weekday evenings from 9 to 11 pm, and on Sunday nights from 7 to 10. Those slots must have gone so well that the station simply decided to also carry him live in the mornings.

If anybody finds out more about what happened to Footy, please post it here.

She's just a girl

Mike and the Mad Dog - no more

Ok, so I haven't posted anything here in a while.

Call it the summer duldroms, or boredom or running several other websites or whatever, but don't call it a comeback.

And don't post the end of DJMoves on my own site.

Anyway, I have been listening closely to 660 WFAN in NY all summer for clues to the future of the Mike and the Mad Dog show, which was number 1 more often than not during it's 19 years in the afternoon slot.

Leave it to me to be out of state on vacation the day they announce it.

Last week, the show formally removed "and the Mad Dog" from its name, leaving only Francesca on the Fan.

I was saddened, because while I thought it was funny that somebody with what sounds like a speech impediment could be so successful on the radio, Chris Russo brought ALL the energy and life to the Mike and the Mad Dog program.

It was also comforting to hear somebody get paid to discuss sports who knew almost as little as I do about it.

Well, I don't have Sirius or XM radio, so I won't be listening to the new Chris Russo show - um, that is, CHANNEL - Sirius channel 123 and XM channel 144 will relaunch as Mad Dog Radio. This is according to CNN, along with the fact that Russo will host the channel's anchor program, "The Mad Dog Sports Show," beginning September 15 2008.

But I won't be listening to Mike Francesca anymore either. The guy just brings me down, all grumpy and bored-sounding. Bored by himself... how do you think WE feel? You can almost hear the execs telling him, "Put more life into it Mike, wake up a little!"
I mean, he sounds like he's trying... But, he also SOUNDS like he's trying.

Darren and Coba Out?

DJMoves here. Just got the following message from a fan in Colorado:

Hey all,

I got an email earlier this evening that my 99.9 radio in Colorado Springs has NOT renewed the contracts of Darren and Coba. They were the morning show DJs. I would like to know where they are going.

Also, George McFly seems to be MIA (DJMoves: That was short-lived). He was the late afternoon/early evening DJ. He was on from 3 to 6 pm. Any ideas of what happened to him?

Thanks,

Tina

Ben Harvey Moves to TV

Being forced from one of the coolest radio jobs ever due to a format flip two years ago didn't keep former K-Rock DJ Ben Harvey down. In fact, with all the radio shows he's been appearing on lately, and all his other gigs - it's hard not to hear or see him!

If you're looking to reconnect with your favorite evening New York voice, check out Ben's Ben and Dave show Podcast on his website - benharvey.net.

Or if you're looking for the latest rantings and news of New York DJs that you can't find here, then visit Ben's Blog at www.benharvey.net/blog/.

On top of all that, Ben's doing regular entertainment reporting and hosting a talk show at here! Networks (www.heretv.com). For those of you who have been living in the 1950's, here! is a gay subscription, or on-demand, television network on cable.

Feeling Nostalgic, So Let's Rock

It went on for several weeks, maybe even a few months, way back in 2005. I couldn't get this damn song out of my head. This was especially strange because I hadn't actually heard it in several years! I remember my orange cassette tape - always easy to find among my collection of mostly black and white plastic - But do I even have a cassette player today?

Today, about three years later, I realized that I could probably find it on YouTube and share it with you folks. Maybe you've never heard "Around the Dial" from one of the greatest albums of all time, Give The People What they Want. Listen to the words in this classic Kinks song and perhaps you'll relate to the confusion, angst or whatever it is that YOU experienced that day when you turned on your radio and your DJ was no longer there. It all goes back to why I started this site.

Two DJs in PA

I don't normally comment on Internet radio, but when a couple of DJs who competed for morning listeners for more than a dozen years get together, it could get interesting.

Ken Matthews spent 15 years at B104 in Allentown, PA, where he was the morning host until his plug was prematurely pulled back in '06. (Damn, I can't believe DJMoves has been around that long!)

Gary Smith spent 17 years at WSBG in STROUDSBURG, PA, where he was the morning host.

If you're like me, you learned everything you know about Allentown from Billy Joel but have never been there. So, I checked Google Maps (see below) and it is only about 40 miles from Stroudsburg (which I never heard of because Billy never sang about it).

Now, I hear (from Ken Matthews) that Ken Matthews will be a guest on Gary Smith's morning-Internet-radio show, online at GaryintheMorning.com this Monday, 2/4 at 8:00 AM EST.

Could it be interesting? Tune in Monday morning to find out. You can also visit the Ken Matthews website for more on the visiting DJ (nice site, BTW, and Ken has a whole host of media services available, including public speaking).

KY Slips Away

Back to Rockville, the music blog of the Kansas City Star, reports today that KY is no longer.

All staff allegedly fired, and format allegedly flipped. And, as usual, no notice given to you - the fans who tuned in this morning expecting to hear familiar voices live on the air. It probably makes you feel worse that there was also no notice given to the radio personalities, AKA, the people who publicly lost their jobs.

Sorry, I'm just the messenger. As usual, the offending radio station and its website are silent on the subject. A check of 99.7 KY's site, www.kyys.com, at the time of this posting showed all the regular DJs listed as if nothing was happening.

Letters Like This

are the reason I run DJ Moves:

Hello,

I would like to report a missing DJ. Mitch Kelly was a DJ on the morning show on KWNR 95.5 FM in Las Vegas, NV for about 10 years. A little over a year ago they brought back a DJ to host with Mitch and more recently brought on a younger female to produce the morning show. It appears they pushed Mitch out the door. I have listened every morning for as long as I can remember and all of a sudden he’s gone without warning or mention. Needless to say I don’t listen to KWNR anymore and I can’t stand the other Country station in town.

Just wondering where he is.

Thanks,

Kanesha

Kanesha, it looks like Mitch was fired in early December. And from what I've been seeing around the Internet, you weren't the only one who was caught off guard. The station apparantly didn't miss a beat in going on without him and acting as if he wasn't there.

Basically, it looks like Mitch didn't leave Las Vegas on his own terms like Nick Cage.
